Abstract

In the last decades, the energy crisis has become a major issue facing our world. Scientists are working hard in the search for finding renewable, safe, and clean energy sources dependent on solar energy. Hydrogen is envisaged as a promising renewable fuel, also an environmentally friendly source of energy fuel. PEC- water splitting is one of the ways to obtain hydrogen fuel, and it depends mainly on the use of sunlight, water, and a photoactive medium (semiconductor material). The present thesis explains the preparation of (Fe, Ni) codoped Co3O4 thin films using the spray pyrolysis technique. The prepared films were characterized via using different analysis techniques, then they were used as photoactive mediums in the PEC-water splitting process.
This thesis includes three chapters:
Chapter 1: Provides a general introduction to thethin-film technology, different techniques used for preparing thin films. Also, it disused the previous methods for the synthesis of Co3O4 thin films and their application in many scientific fields. Also, Describes the principles of the PEC-water splitting process, the used semiconductor materials, factors affecting the performance of the semiconductor material in this process, afvantages and drawbacks for using cobalt oxide (CO3O4) in this process.
Chapter 2: contains the experimental techniques which used for the preparation and characterization of the fabricated samples such as SEM, XPS, EDX………….etc.
Chapter 3: Includes the practical work for the preparation of (Fe, Ni) codoped Co3O4 thin films, different characterization techniques and discussion. Also, the PEC- water splitting and impedance experimental work and some computational details.
