Abstract

“Anna” is a cultivar of apple grown widely in Egypt. Orchard floor management systems (OFMS) are essential for fruit production. This trial was done in two parts during 2016 and 2017 seasons. Two field experiments were involved in part one to study the effect of inorganic (black, silver / brown, white and control) and organic (peanut shells and wood chips with three layers thickness; 0.0 control , 7 and 15cm) orchard floor management systems on soil properties, weed control, canopy microclimate, tree yield and fruit quality. Storage study was conducted in part two to study the effect of preharvest treatments carried out in part one on storability and marketability of “Anna” apple fruits. Black plastic mulches increased soil temperature, moisture and relative water content (RWC), increased vegetative growth (No. leaves per shoot, shoot length and leaf area per shoot), tree characteristics (tree volume and height, canopy circumference and diameter and TCSA) and tree productivity (No. fruits per tree, tree yield, yield efficiency and crop density) black and silver / brown plastic mulch achieved 100 % weed control efficiency. Reflective plastic mulch advanced fruit maturity by 1 week over control, increased SSC and decreased fruit acidity during cold storage , and black plastic mulch was the best treatment in marketing period. Organic OFM decreased soil temperature, maintained soil moisture, decreased weed density and improved vegetative growth. The thicker layer of wood chips increased tree yield. The thicker layer of wood chips and peanut shells decreased fruit weight loss during cold storage. Organic mulches were maintained fruit firmness and increased SSC / acid ratio during cold storage.
Considering the economics of mulch, availability and the distance that it needs to be transported to the site of application, plastic mulches can be recommended to use in commercial apple orchard. While, the organic mulches (peanut shells and wood chips) if it locally available and sufficient it can be recommended.
