Abstract

Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) is a frank picture of female child abuse that is practiced widely in many countries especially in Africa. This procedure is considered a fundamental violation of human rights. The procedure is expected to be declining in Egypt in response to the recent medicolegal litigation in 2007.
Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) causes female sexual dysfunction disorders in terms of desire/libido, arousal, pain/discomfort, and inhibited orgasm. Sexual dysfunction adversely affects the quality of life, and it may often be responsible for psychopathological disturbances and other health problems.
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of FGM on both the quality of sexual life and psychological outcomes in females who underwent FGM as compared to control ones. Two groups were recruited in this study each with 48 females; one group with FGM and the other was without FGM.
The two groups were compared as regard many demographic data such as age, level of education, associated chronic diseases and previous gynaecological history. The results revealed no statistically significant difference between the two groups in the basic demographic data, medical history and gynaecological history except for the methods previously used for contraception (P= 0.031).
The females within the two groups showed significant difference in their satisfaction with the process and subsequently in their future decision in performing circumcision for their daughters.
The study used different questionnaires and scores to compare the sexual satisfaction and psychological effects of the females in the study. For assessment of sexual satisfaction, Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) questionnaire translated into Arabic was used and showed no significant difference between the two groups except for two domains; lubrication and orgasm.
Concerning the psychiatric analysis of the two groups, Anxiety Hamilton score and Depression Beck score were used and showed no statistically significant difference between the two groups in the two scores. Also 31.2% of the females in the group of FGM showed positive symptoms for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
