Abstract

Thyroid gland surgery is one of the most common endocrine surgeries worldwide. Although it is considered by many surgeons as a very common procedure, there are still some complications, with unacceptable and unfavorable consequences for the patient. Visual identification of the RLN during thyroid surgery has been shown to be associated with lower rates of RLN palsy. The technique of methylene blue dye injection through the inferior thyroid artery to recognize the RLN in patient suffering from various causes of thyroid disease and undergoing thyroid gland surgery. For this purpose, the current study was conducted to evaluate the value of injection methylene blue dye in the inferior thyroid artery for identification of the recurrent laryngeal nerve. This prospective study included a total of 94 of patients underwent thyroidectomy who were divided into 2 equal groups; group A that included 47 patients who were injected with 0.5 ml of the dye in inferior thyroid artery (intervention group), and group B which included 47 patients who were not injected with the dye (control group).
