Abstract English summary The objective of the present study is to revise critically the taxonomic relationships between the available taxa of the genus Medicago (tribe Trifolieae, family Fabaceae) and to evaluate the taxonomic status in the genus and its infrageneric taxa. Seeds of thirty-six taxa were obtained from the institute of plant genetics & Horticulture (IPK) gene bank, Gatersleben, Germany and the International Centre for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), Aleppo-Syria. Seeds are grown at faculty of Science, Menoufia University. It was found that there was no previous complete work on macro- and micro- morphological and karyotype studies on the studied taxa. The studied taxa are belonged to 4 sections (Carestensis, Orbiculares, Medicago and Spirocarpos) and 5 subsections (Falcago, Suffruticosa, Intertextae, Rotatae, and pachyspireae). The present study based on: - Detection of macro & micro- morphological characters of juvenile and mature plants for delimiting the taxonomic relationships of the studied taxa - Detection of the somatic chromosome characteristics, including morphology and number of chromosome in order to revise the chromosomes numbers of the studied taxa with the previous studies and manipulation of these cytological data with the taxonomy of the studied Medicago taxa and evaluating the phylogenetic relationships between them. |
