Abstract Due to the increasing need for the expansion of sewage services in Egypt, the general trend of projects is the vertical expansions of sewage treatment plants instead of horizontal expansions through the development of existing conventional treatment plants using new technologies to reach the maximum possible capacity of the plant while maintaining the treated water quality standards according to the Egyptian Code and the Ministerial Law, where the plants could be upgraded with minimum cost and without building additional civil works. This study aims to develop and upgrade the efficiency of existing conventional activated sludge treatment plants in Egypt using many possible techniques without the need to add new units. The study explains the following: - Conventional activated sludge can be upgraded to step-feed system and increasing the capacity of the plant to 3 times the design capacity of the plant (1.50 times the maximum capacity), and this is the most suitable and the cheapest one - Conventional activated sludge can be upgraded to MBBR system and increasing the capacity of the plant to 4 times the design capacity of the plant (2.00 times the maximum capacity), and this is the most expensive solution - Conventional activated sludge can be upgraded to textile bioreactor system and increasing the capacity of the plant to 2.35 times the design capacity of the plant (1.17 times the maximum capacity) |
