Abstract

”Background: Tracheostomy is a common surgical procedure performed for critically ill patients. Hence, critical care nurses should be knowledgeable and be able to provide evidence-based care to safely and professionally satisfy the unique needs of patients with the tracheostomy tube. Aim: This study aimed to assess the practice of tracheostomy nursing care for critically ill patients in intensive care units affiliated with Mansoura Emergency Hospital. Method: A descriptive observational research design was used to conduct this study with a convenience sample of 60 critical care nurses working in three surgical intensive care units at Mansoura Emergency Hospital in Egypt. One tool was used to collect data for this study: the practice of tracheostomy nursing care assessment sheet. Results: 60% of participant nurses performed poor tracheostomy assessment, and 68.3% of them demonstrated poor practice when preparing for tracheostomy care. Additionally, most of the nurses demonstrated poor practice level of tracheostomy care implementation (73.3%), post-care (73.3%), and documentation of tracheostomy care (83.3%). Participant nurses’ practice of tracheostomy tube suctioning (70%), stoma care and dressing (70%), oral care (100%), and nebulization (48.33%) was poor. However, their practice of securing the tracheostomy tube (46.67%) was fair. Conclusion and Recommendations: overall, participant nurses’ total practice score level of tracheostomy care was poor. These findings may have a negative effect on patients’ outcomes. This emphasizes the importance of organizing tracheostomy care refresher training programs regularly to improve nurses’ practice. Further studies are needed to investigate the effectiveness of tracheostomy educational programs on critical care nurses’ practice.
