Abstract

The results obtained in this study show that hot-water extracts of four different species of marine algae (Spirulina platensis, Anabaena oryzae, Scenedesmus obliquus and Chlorella vulgaris) have anti-cholesterol and antioxidant activities. The results also provide additional information on the probable use of algal extracts, alone or in combination, in the treatment of high cholesterol diseases. In the specific case, the verified improved anti-cholesterol activity of (S. platensis + C. vulgaris) hot-water extracts’ combination may find a possible application in the development of products for high cholesterol treatments. The high contents of extracted phenolic and tannin contents reveals that algal extracts can be a source of natural antioxidants along with anti-cholesterol activity. In vivo studies are required to ascertain its potential health effects in the prevention of oxidative damage and cholesterol induced degenerative diseases
