Abstract Post-mastectomy pain managed by opioids alone often leads to side effects such as nausea and vomiting. Inadequate control of pain may later develop into chronic pain syndrome (paraesthesias, phantom breast pain and intercostobrachial neuralgia) in 25%–40% of the patients. For these reasons, regional analgesic techniques have been advocated for effective pain management. Various regional anesthetic procedures have been tried to provide better acute pain control and, consequently, less chronic pain. They can reduce perioperative opiates requirement and thereby decreasing their possible side effects. These regional procedures include local wound infiltration, thoracic epidural, and ultrasound guided paravertebral block. |
