Abstract
The present study aims at investigating whether conjunctive explicitation is an inherent feature of the translated texts of the corpus in question or it occurs similarly in the source texts. The corpus of the present study is designed to be an English-Arabic parallel bidirectional corpus of political speeches. The present study also aims at exploring whether the phenomenon of explicitation is affected by the differences between the English and Arabic languages or the different translation directions. This study also aims at examining if political speeches can affect the nature of explicitation. This study, in both translation directions, adopts the schema that is set by Ashraf Abdul Fattah (2010) in investigating conjunctive explicitation. To apply this schema, the researcher adopts two theoretical frameworks. In the English-Arabic direction, the researcher adopts Halliday and Matthiessen’s (2004) classification of English conjunctions. In the Arabic-English direction, the researcher adopts Ryding’s (2005) classification of Arabic connectives. The present study uses Sketch Engine software for investigating conjunctive explicitation. The findings of the present study are as follows: explicitation is found to be a feature that occurs in the English and Arabic source texts and the differences between the English and Arabic languages can affect the phenomenon of explicitation. The findings also reveal that there is an asymmetric relation between explicitation and implicitation in regard with different translation directions. Moreover, conjunctive explicitation is not affected by the nature of political speeches.
