Abstract

ESKD has a major effect on global health, both as a direct cause of global morbidity and mortality. For the majority of patients suffering from ESRD, transplantation is still the preferred treatment option. Renal transplantation is associated with better survival more than dialysis. Moreover, Recipients of a living donor kidney transplant have a better survival compared to those receiving a kidney transplant from a deceased donor.Even though the aim of kidney transplantation is to maximize the quality of life and patient’s survival, the patient must be aware of the risks associated with the cause of renal failure and of established comorbidities, as well as the risk of surgery and the immunosuppression required. While the literature contains a wide range of opinions on the suitability of kidney transplantation in the literature, most will agree that there are absolute contraindications to kidney transplantation. A preliminary screening process should identify absolute contraindications to transplantation and modifiable risk factors. This process should be tailored according to the patient’s symptoms and history.Despite advancements in surgical and diagnostic procedures, surgical complications after kidney transplantation continue to be a significant clinical challenge that can adversely affect patient and graft survival. Moreover, surgical complications can increase morbidity, hospitalization, and expenses.Surgical complications are multifactorial in origin. Additionally, there has been a wide range of estimates published for the incidence of different surgical complications after renal transplantation. This variability is probably due to different methods of reporting, duration of follow-up and how broadly surgical complications have been defined.
