Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the attitude of the Mauritania Nouakchott University students’ toward English. The study is motivated by the need to investigate the attitudes of students living in a multilingual community where two varieties of Arabic language are used side by side with English and French. A crucial fact about the Arabic spoken in Mauritania is that four different dialects do exist and are shared by large groups; these varieties are: Hassaniya, Wolof, Polar and Soninke. The first chapter sheds light on definition of the attitude, while the second chapter offers review of literature. The third chapter tackles the linguistic and educational situations in Mauritania and the historical events that lead to today‘s linguistic repertoire in the country. Lastly, the fourth chapter contains the questionnaires, methodology and the tools of analysis both quantitatively and qualitatively, the chapter also presents discussion of the results. It is important to mention here that this research was based methodologically on questionnaire that contains thirteen questions about Nouakchott University students’ motivations and their attitudes toward English learning. In order to test the students’ attitude toward learning English, data were collected and analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. The present study found out that 90% percent of the sample of the study showed high motivation and enthusiasm toward students’ acquisition and learning of English. The study was conducted on participants living in a multilingual community similarity between English and French which facilitate the process of learning English in Mauritania.
