Abstract Objective: Determine the difference between patients with polyarticular osteoarthritis (OA) and those with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) regarding the disease burden helping to settle recommendations for improving health-related quality of life in patients with either disease. Patients and methods: Twenty seven polyarticular OA patients and twenty seven RA patients attending the Rheumatology and Rehabilitation Outpatient Clinic, Kasr Al-Ainy Hospitals, Cairo University, were enrolled. Polyarticular OA was defined as the coexistence of Heberden{u2019}s nodes and OA of two other joint groups. OA of hand and knee was classified according to the ACR criteria for classification of knee and hand OA while RA was classified according to the 2010 American College of Rheumatology / European League Against Rheumatism classification criteria. All RA patients were receiving disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs for at least six months prior to enrollment. Patients with severe disease activity (clinical disease activity index/CDAI >22) and those on biological therapy were excluded. Baseline demographic characteristics and cumulative clinical disease manifestations in addition to associated comorbidities were obtained from all patients |
