Abstract

Background: Accurate open reduction and internal fixation for metacarpal fractures of the hand is required in some patients with unstable metacarpal fractures; otherwise, closed treatment techniques offer satisfactory results in most of these cases as these fractures are stable either before or after closed reduction. Kirschner wires and mini-set plates, when used in properly selected cases, can provide fixation which allows for mobilization of joints and hence good functional results. Aim: To compare between Kirschner wire and mini-set plates in treatment of unstable metacarpal shaft fractures. Study design: Prospective study. Methods: A prospective study include 40 patients with unstable metacarpal shaft fractures during the period from May 2014 to November 2019, equally divided into two groups; one group treated with percutaneous Kirschner wires and the other treated with mini-set plates and screws. Results: The miniplate group result was excellent in 60% of cases, good in 25% of cases, fair in 10% of cases and poor in 5% of cases, while in Kirschner wires group result was excellent in 70% of cases, good in 20% of cases and fair in 10% of cases and no patient had poor result as judged according to the criteria of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand
