Abstract Purpose: The aim of the current study was to assess the impact of a single bout of aerobic exercise on brain waves related to attention control (AC) and hyper activity in children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Subjects and procedures: this study was conducted on 40 children (25 child diagnosed as ADHD with age ranged from 8 and 12 years and 15 normal age matching children. Each child was evaluated by single channel EEG / EMG biofeedback apparatus for detection of Theta and Beta (mean amplitude) and Theta / Beta ratio as an indicator of brain executive function and attention control and EMG mean amplitude as indicator of hyper activity were recorded. Only children with ADHD were subjected to a single bout of aerobic exercise for15 min on bicycle ergometer and treadmill and reassessment of Theta and Beta (mean amplitude), Theta / Beta ratio and EMG amplitude were repeated immediately after exercise termination and degree of deviation from normal were statistically analyzed. Results: A single bout of aerobic exercise decreased the amplitude of theta band frequency and increased the amplitude of beta band frequency resulting in a decrease of theta/beta ratio and decreased the EMG amplitude. Conclusion: It can be concluded that a single bout of aerobic can improve attention control and decrease hyperactivity in children with ADHD |
