Abstract

A ventilator bundle (VB) is a straightforward set of evidence-based practices that should be done collectively. Most VB measures are closely related to nursing interventions. Several studies evaluated the effectiveness of the VB in reducing the occurrence of ventilator-associated pneumonia. The efficacy of VB in early mechanical ventilation weaning has not been adequately assessed. Aim : this study aimed to evaluate the effect of implementing VB on critical care nurses’ performance and early weaning of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Method : A quasi experimental research design was used. Two samples were included in the study. A sample of 30 critical care nurses who working in the chest intensive care units of the Mansoura University hospital in Egypt. A purposive sample of 80 mechanically ventilated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients (40 patients for each bundle and control groups) who were admitted to the previously mentioned intensive care units. The nurses’ performance of the VB checklist and mechanically ventilated patient assessment tool and evaluation tool were used to collect data. Results : The mean nurses’ performance scores were improved post-implementation of the training sessions compared with pre-training with highly statistically significant differences (P<0.001). Moreover, the bundle group demonstrated higher weaning scores and fewer ventilation duration and length of intensive care units stay than the control group. Conclusion : The implementation of the VB training sessions can improve the nurses’ performance and mechanically ventilated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients’ weaning outcome. Recommendations : Continuous in-service training programs on VB should be organized for critical care nurses to enhance their performance and keep them up to date. Additionally, integrating the VB into the weaning trial of patients on a ventilator is recommended to accelerate weaning and reduce the duration of ventilatory support.
