Abstract Neonatal intensive care unit is a unit specializing in the care of high risk neonates. its environment provides challenges as well as benefits, stressors for the neonates can include continual light, a high level of noise, separation from their mothers, painful procedures, and interference with the opportunity to breast feed. Neonatal intensive care unit is equipped with complex machines and monitoring devices designed for the unique needs of tiny neonates. (1, 2) Iatrogenic is defined as adverse condition occurring as a result of a diagnostic procedure or treatment by a medical team including physicians, nurses, technicians, laboratories, and anyone involved in neonatal care. Iatrogenic that cause harm to neonates in neonatal intensive care unit are characterized as adverse events and it can lead to morbidity and mortality that could be prevented. (3, 4) Neonates are a particularly vulnerable population and may be at further risk of harm from medical errors because of small body size, weight-based dosages, off-label drug usage, availability of stock solutions in a variety of concentrations, inability to communicate with providers, and immature body organs affecting drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion.(5) Regarding safety of neonates, it is worth mentioning that neonates may be exposed to higher risks due to vulnerability of these neonates, such as extreme physiological fragility and immaturity of organic systems, which harm their safety for requiring specific care. |
