Abstract

L
actose intolerance is a clinical syndrome that manifests with characteristic signs and symptoms upon the consumption of food substances containing lactose, a disaccharide. Significant changes in knowledge and approach toward LI have occurred over the past quarter century, since the first statement on LI was published by the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Nutrition. It is hoped that, health care professionals involved in a child’s health care will feel confident to give guidance on post-gastroenteritis secondary LI without referral to secondary or specialist care. Finally, management of LI globally will require both education and product development.

Total score, 100% would categorize as the following according to mothers response, their level of knowledge would categorize as the following:
 Good level ≥ 75%
 Average level 60 < 75|%
 Poor level < 60%
2- Practices of mothers during care of children with LI as: first: Anthropometric measurements: weight, length or height and head circumference. Second: nutrition (preparing of food, preparing of formula, feeding, and post feeding). Third: Activities, sleep, play and rest.
Scoring system to practice: Mothers practices was assessed by the researcher and scored as (1) score was given for correctly done, (0) score was given for incorrect done/ not done. Total score, 100% would categorize as the following according to the mothers actual practices:
 Competent ≥ 85%
 Incompetent < 85%
The main results of the study showed that:
 The mean age of the studied children was 7.09±3.85.

 In addition, the result showed that, minority (12%) of studied children’s length at diagnosis, and the current children’s (15%) length not normal.

 Moreover, the result showed that almost two fifth of children had poor level of lifestyle regarding LI.
 Slightly more than two thirds of studied mothers had incompetent level of practice regarding care of LI children.
 According to the study finding there was a statistical significant relation between mothers’ knowledge level and practice level of about LI.
 Moreover, the result showed that, there was a statistical significant relation between mothers’ knowledge level and level of life of style about LI.
 In addition, the results of present study noted that, there was statistical significant relation between mothers’ practice level and level of life of style about LI.
 Finally, the research questions were confirmed by that, there was a positive correlation between mothers’ total score knowledge, practice and life of style about LI.

Based on the findings of the present study, the following could be concluded:
The research questions were confirmed by that, there were positive correlation between mothers’ total score knowledge, practice and life of style of a child with lactose intolerance.
