Abstract

Purpose: To compare between the effect of bone graft with I-PRF (sticky bone) and bone graft with collagen type I for three-dimensional ridge augmentation at lower border defect of the rat mandible. Materials and Methods: Forty-five Wistar rats (150–250 g) comprised the sample. A round through-and-through bone defect (3mm in diameter) was created at the inferior border of the mandible on the right side using round trephine bur in each rat. These rats were randomly and equally divided into three groups. Fifteen rats in each group; group I (control group, in which the defect was left to heal spontaneously), group II (in which the defect was filled with bone graft with collagen type I), and group III (in which the defect was filled with bone graft with I-PRF). In the three groups bone volume of the defect was calculated by measuring the bone height, width, and thickness were measured in the different follow up periods (4th,6th,8th weeks), histological, and histomorphometric analysis were done at the same follow up periods. Post Hoc Test was used for data collection while statistical significance was at a P value ≤ 0.05. Results: Concerning the histological and histomorphometric analysis, there was no statistical significant difference between both group II and group III in all the studied times except at 4th weeks (p3=0.004). While revealed a statistically significant difference between group I (control) when compared to both group II and group III in all the studied times. Regarding to the physical measurement; at 8th weeks, there was a statistically significant difference between group I (control) and both group II and group III (p1<0.001, p2<0.001). While there was a statistically non-significant difference between group II and group III in all the studied times according to the percentage of defect volume reduction. Conclusion: Both I-PRF mixed with bone graft (sticky bone) and bone graft with Collagen type I accelerate bone regeneration but still I-PRF considered as an autogenous, cost effective and easily obtained material. Keywords: Bone defect, Injectable platelet rich fibrin, collagen type I.
