Abstract

This study was conducted in order to know the effect of periodontal treatment by topical application of a gel containing coenzyme Q10 prepared by nanotechnology in addition to scaling and root planning, and comparing it with the traditional method of periodontal treatment by scaling and root planning only in patients with moderate chronic periodontitis. This study included healthy patients who do not suffer from any systemic diseases and were excluded from taking antibiotics, whether topical or systemic in the six months preceding the research so as not to affect the results of the research. This study was conducted on fifteen patients suffering from moderate chronic periodontitis, and the approval of the Scientific Research Ethics Committee of Mansoura University No. 01060819A was obtained. The fifteen patients were treated by scaling and root planning in addition to applying Coenzyme Q10 gel on a certain side of the mouth. The opposite (control) side was treated with scalling and root planning only. All patients were examined and evaluated clinically before the start of treatment and after six weeks of treatment to see the extent of inflammation of their supporting tissues using clinical indicators of: gingival index, bleeding on probing, pocket depth index and clinical attachment loss index. Chemical analysis of the gingival fluid to determine the total antioxidant capacity. Samples were collected from all patients from the gingival crevicular fluid, and the samples were taken from the periodontal pockets from each side of the jaw, before starting treatment and also after six weeks of treatment.
