Abstract

This study is a longitudinal descriptive hospital-based study conducted on 45 patients; based on CPIS, a total of 45 patients were diagnosed to develop VAP. Patients were recruited from the Chest Department, Assiut Universty Hospitals, in the period from 2019 to 2021 and the study was done in the Clinical Pathology Department of Assiut University. Their age ranged from 30 - 80 years. 45 VAP patients were subjected to complete history taking including length of ICU stay and duration of mechanical ventilation and clinical examination using APATCH Ⅱ scale to assess the disease severity The aim of present study was to assess the role of pentraxin3 in the early diagnosis of ventilator-associated pneumonia The following laboratory investigations were done Routine tests Complete blood count (CBC) using CELL-DYN Ruby analyzerErythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) measured by standard Westergren method (mm/h) Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) performed by Advia method (mg/L) by rate nephelometry Liver function tests: aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), serum albumin, total protein, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, alkaline phosphatise, performed by Advia method based on photometery Renal function tests: serum createnine and blood urea, performed by Advia method based on photometery Culture Detection of pus on endotracheal aspirate and semiquantitative sputum culture.Specific investigations Determining the srum level of pentraxin 3 (PTX3) by ELISA.
