Abstract

This thesis is concerned with studying the effect of two antibiotics, one of them is a veterinary antibiotic, which is Baycox 2.5%, and the other is a human antibiotic, which is Septazole, as well as seven medicinal plant extracts, namely lemon peel, lemongrass, thyme, wormwood, cloves, basil and anise against Nosema disease that infects honey bee. The effectiveness of these substances and extracts against Nosema disease was studied by calculating the mortality rate of infected bees that were treated with these extracts and chemicals. The number of Nosema spores was also calculated and some histopathological and histochemical studies were conducted on the hypopharyngeal gland and the midgut of honey bees. After conducting the experiment, it was concluded that the plant extract of lemon peel is the best of them, followed by lemongrass which resulted in the lowest death rate for workers and the number of Nosema spores. While the drug Septazole, wormwood and thyme showed weak to moderate activity against Nosema disease. The weakest extracts and substances were Baycox 2.5%, cloves, anise and basil. Histopathological and histochemistry tests of the hypopharyngeal gland and the midgut of bees confirmed the same results.
