Abstract Hip fracture are a major of morbidity and mortality in the elderly and continue to be a challenge to be treated. The number of the hip fractures occurring each year is increasing as the number of the elderly persons in the population increases. Surgical stabilization of the peri-trochanteric fractures is one of the most commonly performed orthopedicprocedures,to reducemorbidity and mortality in the elder.Trochanteric fractures are commonly treated nowadays by eitherintra-medullary or extra-medullary fixation. In our study, we are comparing between two groups: Gamma nail and DHS in treatment of unstable proximal femoral fractures. Results obtained report that Gamma nail had better results as: less blood loss, less soft tissuedisturbance, less operative time, less limb shortening, better walking ability, and functional outcome than DHS. However, Gamma nail insertion is associated with more radiological exposure. |
