Abstract

Background: Early oral feeding (EOF) after cesarean section delivery is still controversial. This study was designed to compare the effect of early oral feeding versus delayed oral feeding after uncomplicated caesarean section in terms of time of return of bowel movement, duration of intravenous fluids and hospital stay during COVID-19 era and post- operative gastrointestinal effect. Methods: In this clinical trial, 102 pregnant women who undergone elective cesarean section with regional anesthesia were randomized into three feeding groups for comparative study (Very early oral feeding 3 hours after surgery ,Early oral feeding 6 hours after surgery, Late oral feeding 12 hours after feeding). In the three groups, liquid diets were commenced irrespective to intestinal sounds, flatus or stool passage. Patients able to tolerate the liquid diet were then gradually introduced to the regular diet. Main clinical outcomes included time of return of normal bowel function and postoperative gastrointestinal complications. Objectives: To assess whether very early oral feeding (3 hours) is better aftecesarean in terms of return of normal bowel function and postoperative gastrointestinal complications
