Abstract

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a group of metabolic and cardiovascular disorders, including obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia and hypertension, which directly increase the danger of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the anti-hyperglycemic effect of oral administration of Hibiscus and/or Ginger using metformin as a standard drug. Also to study the possible anti-obesity effect of oral administration of Hibiscus and/or Ginger using Garcinia as a standard drug. Metabolic syndrome was induced in rats by ingestion of high fat high fructose (HFHF) diet for 90 days. Hibiscus in two doses levels (500 mg/kg p.o. and 250 mg/kg p.o.), ginger in two doses levels (400 mg/kg p.o. and 250 mg/kg p.o.), garcinia (1000 mg/kg p.o.) and metformin (500 mg/kg p.o.) were orally administered through out the last 30 days of HFHF regimen. In conclusion, we can say that combining both hibiscus low dose and ginger low dose could be useful strategy in the treatment of different symptoms of metabolic syndrome. The combination of the low doses results in a significant decrease in body weight while each low dose alone does not. The combination of the low doses of ginger and hibiscus possess synergistic activity in normalizing serum glucose, insulin and leptin levels, and significantly decreased serum triglycerides, uric acid, ALT and AST levels. Also in increasing serum HDL level since both alone didn{u2019}t increase serum HDL level
