Abstract Objective: The aim of this study is to describe the frequency, pattern of axillary nodal recurrence after negative sentinel lymph node biopsy as well as the association of the used technique with the development of recurrence at the NCI. Methods: This study is a retrospective analysis of collected data on all female cases with breast cancer who underwent axillary sentinel lymph node biopsy for N0 axilla & were found to have no nodal metastasis at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Cairo, Egypt from 2013-2017. Results: 215 SLN negative patients were evaluated with a median follow up of 3 years. Though the total number of reviewed cases was 215, 34 (15.8%) cases were missing due to a lack of follow up at the conclusion of this study. The incidence of axillary recurrence was 5 (2.84%) total events out of 176 cases all were 40 years old & above. Conclusion: The recurrence rate post axillary sentinel lymph node biopsy for breast cancer at the National Cancer Institute is well within the accepted range of 3-5% published in international papers indicating that sentinel lymph node biopsy at the NCI is safe & compliant with current international standards |
