Abstract

The (Ph.D.) Degree of Science (Molecular and integrated Physiology) Intrahepatic cholestasis was related with liver diseases, this work was designed to assess effects of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus extract echinochrome (Ech) on intrahepatic cholestasis in rats induced by a single (i.p.) injection of alpha-naphthylisothiocyanate (ANIT) (75 mg/kg body weight). At the 1st day of the curative group and the 3rd day of protective group of rats. Then treated orally for 48hr (one dose / 24hr) with Ech (1, 5 and 10 mg/kg body weight) or ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) 80 mg/kg body weight after and before ANIT dosing in curative and protective groups, respectively. The results revealed that, ANIT induced oxidative stress in rats, which have bad impacts on liver and kidney functions confirmed by the histopathological examination. However, Ech showed ability to reduce the oxidative stress, which leads to significant improvement in most of the biochemical parameters. In addition, histopathological examination showed an improvement in the liver and the kidney architecture of the treated group as compared to ANIT groups
