Abstract

The aim of the present study was to configure out the effect of low dose administration of probiotics (50mg/kg b.w.) on glucose, lipid profile and some antioxidants enzyme levels, in addition to serum malondialdehyde (MDA) in diabetic rats. Forty (40) male Wistar rats (100{u2013}180 g body weight) were selected. Biochemical tests selected for rats were blood glucose, lipid profile, MDA serum malondialdehyde, GSH glutathione concentration, CAT plasma catalase activity were estimated using colorimetric methods. While SOD superoxide dismutase and GPx glutathione peroxidase activities were determined using kinetic methods. The obtained data revealed that oral administration of probiotics for 3 months showed nonsignificant increase in body weight in DP group compared with DC group while slight decrease in CP group compared with NC one. Also, data revealed significant increase in reduced glutathione (GSH) level (p< 0.001) in DP group compared with DC one while nonsignificant increased level in CP group compared with NC one respectively. Groups orally administered with probiotic yoghurt (CP and DP) show significant decrease (p<0.001) in blood glucose compared to their respective controls. Regarding lipid profile, the consumption of probiotics for twelve weeks recorded high significant difference between studied groups. Also, an improvement in lipid profile in both (CP) and (DP) groups compared to (NC) and (CP) respectively as following: Total cholesterol (TC) and LDL-C showed slight non-significant decreased levels, while HDL-C recorded significant increased level in DP group compared with DC group. Also TG showed slight decreased level in both CP and DP groups compared to corresponding CN and DC groups respectively
