Abstract

Background: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is one of the most common progressive autoimmune diseases with a significant impact on function, daily living activities, work ability and patient{u2019}s quality of life. Aim: To evaluate impact of fatigue and pain on activity of daily living among patients with multiple sclerosis. Design: Descriptive correlational design was utilized. Research question: Q: What is the impact of fatigue and pain on activity of daily living among patients with multiple sclerosis? Sample: A convenient sample of 150 Multiple Sclerosis patient were recruited along 6 months. Sitting: The study was conducted in two MS specialized units in one of a university affiliated hospital in Cairo- Egypt include (a) Kasr El Ainy Multiple Sclerosis Research Unit (KAMSRU) and (b) the neurology inpatient department. Tools: Four tools were utilized to collect data; Structured Interview Questionnaire, Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), Pain Numeric Rating Scale (NRS-11) and Barthel Index of Activities of Daily Living. Results: The mean age of the study sample was 31.78 ± 8.038. There was statistically significant correlation in the fatigue and pain mean scores in relation to daily living activities mean scores among the study sample. Conclusion: Fatigue and pain are common symptoms of MS and have negative effects on patient{u2019}s activity of daily living (ADL).Recommendation: Early evaluation and management of fatigue and pain for the patients with MS is essential to improve the level of independency during practicing daily living activities
