Abstract

Purpose: To compare the efficiency of endodiathermy probe followed by intubation in children more than 2 years with those of the standard intubation procedure. Patients and Methods: A prospective comparative randomized clinical study conducted on 160 eyes of children with congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO). The children were divided into group I included 80 eyes of children who underwent probing with a metal probe followed by intubation, and group II included 80 eyes of children who underwent probing with endodiathermy probe followed by intubation. Results: After 1 week and 1 month, there was no statistically significant difference between both groups regarding MUNK score (P-value=0.108, and 0.118, respectively). However, after 3 months and 6 months, there was a statistically significant difference between both groups regarding MUNK score (P-value=0.015*, and 0.01*, respectively) and Fluorescein disappearance test (FDT) results (P-value=0.03*) with a success rate higher in group II than group I (90% vs. 77.5%). Conclusion: The recently introduced endodiathermy probe offers a new alternative technique for probing to treat congenital NLDO. The success rate is higher when compared to the standard method of intubation using a metal probe
