Abstract

Purpose: To compare the Bruch{u2019}s membrane opening minimum rim width (BMO-MRW) and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) measured by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) for their structure-function relationship with visual field parameters in eyes with early and moderate open angle glaucoma. Design: Cross sectional observational study. Participants: One hundred and twenty eyes from one hundred and four patients with early and moderate open angle glaucoma. Methods: All participants had visual field examination with the Humphrey Field Analyzer 24-2 SITA standard strategy, and SD-OCT imaging using Heidelberg Spectralis OCT. RNFLT and BMO-MRW were measured ( average and six sector values). Each of The average RNFLT and average BMO-MRW was correlated to the mean deviation (MD) of the visual field. Descriptive analysis of visual field defects was done according to the pattern deviation map, and the locations of field defects were examined for their correspondence to the location of structural abnormalities on each of the OCT maps (guided by the correspondence map proposed by Garway-Heath et al.,2000) Results: The correlation coefficient between average RNFLT and MD was 0.413. The correlation coefficient between average BMO-MRW and MD was 0.440. There was no statistically significant difference between the two parameters concerning their correlation to MD. The field defects corresponded to the location of structural abnormality in RNFLT in 74 eyes (61.7%).The field defects corresponded to the location of structural abnormality in BMO-MRW in 54 eyes (45%). This difference however, was not statistically significant
