Abstract

This study commenced with a hypothesis that the highly diverse workforce in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which includes expatriate workers in almost every sector who come from an almost unequalled number of countries, and includes an equal mix of females and males, and relatively high educational levels in key sectors, has strengthened the employees{u2019} organizational engagement. Testing that hypothesis, the study analyzes the relationship between workforce diversity and employees{u2019} organizational engagement in a number of institutions regulated by the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (FAHR) in the UAE. The Government introduced various legislative measures in order to create and maintain a diverse workforce in organizations in the UAE. However, whilst institutions in the UAE embrace workforce diversity, they do not fully understand the effect of the relationship between the diversity of workers and their actual degree of engagement. It is against this backDROP that the study explores that relationship in a number of institutions through the FAHR in the UAE. A random sample (n= 250) has been chosen by dividing employees into homogenous strata of administrative and non-administrative employees. The research draws upon data gathered from a questionnaire sent to a number of government, semi-government and private sector institutions and used as a primary means of gathering meaningful statistical information. The investigation uses a cross-sectional research design, rather than a longitudinal study, allowing for an analytical snapshot of the current situation in the UAE. The results show a positive, strong and significant relationship between the independent variables of gender, ethnic, and educational diversity and the dependent variable of the employees{u2019} organizational engagement. The findings show that, although the educational background of employees does positively impact on their engagement, gender and ethnicity impact even more
