Abstract

Introduction: Trochanteric fractures of femur are among the most challenging fractures. Most of these fractures in elderly population results from a simple fall. This category contains stable and unstable fractures. Stable fractures are uncontroversial and give good results. Unstable fractures are controversial and technically challenging . Intra-medullary and Extra-medullary implants are available for their fixation Purpose: To verify the feasibility of treating unstable three and four parts inter-trochanteric fracture of the femur, by internal fixation with Proximal femoral locked Compression plate (PFLCP) , which is able to stabilize the fracture and reduce the displacement. Returning to pre-fracture level of activity, hip function, and post fixation mortality and morbidity rates are evaluated as well. Patients and methods: 20 patients with a mean age of 62.5 years having unstable trochanteric fractures were treated with proximal femoral locked compression plate (PFLCP). All operations were done on a traction table in a supine position via lateral approach to the proximal femur. Clinical and radiological follow-up are going to be conducted for the cases at 6 weeks, 3months and 6 months. Results: The average intra-operative blood loss was between 220 ml to 600 ml with mean of 325 ml . The average hospitalization period was between 5 days to 11 days with mean of 7.9 day. In the study, the average healing (union) duration was 17.67 weeks . Patients started weight bearing in a mean of 10.44 weeks. The functional outcome was documented with Harris hip score . At 3 months , the Harris hip score was between 30 to 70 with a mean of 54.47 . While , at the end of follow up at 6 months the Harris hip score was between 30 to 85 with a mean of 70.26
