Abstract Depression has been identified as one of the most serious and most common health concerns facing adolescents nowadays (Eisnberg et al., 2007; Thapar et al., 2012). The Internet and social media use has been shown to impact symptoms of depression (Tandoc et al., 2015; De vries, et al., 2017), yet the relationship between social media use and depression is unclear due to contradictory findings (Puukko et al., 2020). Therefore, the present study aimed to further understand the potential impact of social media use on depression in an adolescent population, through using the framework of Social Comparison and Social Rank theories and conceptualizing social media envy as a possible link between social media use and depression. The study utilized an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, consisting of a quantitative phase followed by a qualitative phase to test how specific social media behaviors such as intensity of use, following strangers, passive use, and celebrity-related use impacted the depressive symptoms. Six hundred and five (605) participants filled out the questionnaire, followed by fourteen (14) participants who participated in the in-depth interviews |
