Abstract

Background: Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and long-term disability worldwide. Purpose: The purpose of the current study was to identify the difference between the effect of aerobic versus anaerobic exercise on quality of life in stroke patients.Method: Thirty male stroke patients participated in this study. The patients were assigned randomly into three equal groups, (two study groups (A) and (B) and one control (C)).The patients in the control group (C) received the selected physical therapy program including: Prolonged stretching exercises for spastic muscles, Facilitation for weak muscles through: PNF technique, quick stretching. The patients in the study group (A) received aerobic training in addition to the same selected physical therapy program for stroke patients. The patients in the study group (B) received anaerobic training in addition to the same selected physical therapy program for stroke patients. The Outcome Measures: The Arabic version of a short form dimension test (SF-36) was used to assess the quality of life items of the SF-36.All groups were evaluated before and after intervention. Results: The results of the current study revealed significant improvement in the study GA and GB compared with that of the control GC post-treatment in physical functioning, energy/fatigue, emotional well-being, social functioning and general health of the SF-36; with the exception of role limitation due to physical health and role limitation due to emotional problems, there was no significant improvement. Also, the study revealed no significant difference in the quality of life between GA and GB post-treatment. Conclusion: Both aerobic and anaerobic exercise when added to the selected physical therapy can improve the quality of life in stroke patients
