Abstract

Background: Imbalance is a common and often devastating problem among older people, leading to a reduction in activity levels, followed by strength reduction leading to increasing risk of recurent falls. Purpose: To find out the efficacy of whole body vibration versus galvanic stimulation on balance in elderly. Methods: sixty elderly patients of both sexes (33male and 27female) their age ranged from 60 to 70 years old were selected from orthopedic outpatient clinic of Faculty of Physical Therapy. The sixty patients were divided into three groups; each group consisted of twenty patients. group (A) performed a program of balance exercises in addition to whole body vibration 2times/week. group (B) performed a program of balance exercises in addition to galvanic stimulation 2times/week and group (C) control group performed a program of traditional exercises. The balance was assessed at the beginning of the study and after 12 week of treatment. Results: Showed that there is no significant differences (P>0.05) except for Biodex scores (P<0.05) for all groups in their post treatment mean values. Conclusion: Both whole body viberation and galvanic vestibular stimulation are effective in improving balance and quality of life and can be implemented in the rehabilitation program for elderly people aged from 60 to 70 years
