Abstract

Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) may be defined as an abnormal protrusion or bulging of mitral valve leaflet segments into the left atrium past the plane of the mitral annulus during ventricular systole. In typical MVP, the free leaflet edges point toward the left ventricle during systole. In more severe forms of MVP, the free edges of mitral leaflets may lose their chordal support and evert into the left atrium during systole. When that occurs, the mitral valve leaflet is said to be flail.
Accordingly, the purpose of this study was the evaluation of mitral valve apparatus in children with mitral valve prolapse using Echocardiography.
This cross sectional study was conducted at Pediatrics Department at Suez Canal University hospital in Ismailia and included 30 patients with mitral valve prolapse attending to Suez Canal University hospital for echocardiographic evaluation. The study was conducted on two groups: patients group and control group.
In our study there is no significant comparison between patient and control regarding e where X2=2.143 and P-value=0.143 (more than 0.05). We have 28 with 46.7% were females in control group and 32 with 53.3% were males and we have 36 with 60% were females in patients group and 24 with 40% were males.
There is a significant comparison between patient and control regarding age where t=2.059 and P-value=0.042 (less than 0.05). In control group, the age ranged from 3 to 16 by Mea+SD (8.600+3.468). And the aged ranged from 5 to 15 by mean+SD (9.833+3.082).
There is a significant difference between patients and controls group regarding Mitral regurge where X2=80 and P-value=0.000 (less than 0.05). where all controls group M0 with 100%, but 12 with 20% in patients group, 32 with 53.3% were M1 in patient group and 16 with 26.7% were M2 in patients groups.
