Abstract

Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is a widespread disorder with a wide range of harmful outcomes. This includes a series of disorders, as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), central sleep apnea (CSA) or hypoventilation related to sleep. Every syndrome has a specific diagnostic criteria. Obstructive sleep apnea is a chronic treatable disease that has a clinical effect on lifespan. It is defined by repeated events of total (apnea) or partial (hypoapnea) blockage of the upper airway during sleep whereas respiratory efforts last, frequently causing arousals. This leads to intermittent hypoxemia, interrupted sleep, repeated arousals and sleep fragmentation.
It is linked to glucose metabolism disorders such as insulin resistance and diabetes. Various pathophysiological mechanisms, such as intermittent hypoxia, sleep fragmentation, enhancement of systemic inflammation, and increased sympathetic activity, link OSA to diabetes directly or indirectly.
