Abstract

Cancer is the second leading cause of death of non-communicable diseases worldwide. Severe malnutrition is independently associated with high mortality risk and decreased tolerance of chemotherapy. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of nutritional counseling either directly or weekly group counseling for cancer patients.
In our study, we found that BMI for about 26% of cases was ranged (18.5 -24.9), 2% their BMI less than 18.5 and 72% of cancer patients their BMI was more than 24.9. So that the majority of our randomized cases were overweight.
Also, we found that there were decrease in weight, BMI, skinfold, and mid-arm circumference in both group 1 obese with daily counseling and group 2 obese with group weekly counseling after 6 months of therapy but these decrease were not significant. There were decrease in weight, BMI, Skinfold and mid-arm circumference in both group 1with daily nutritional intervention counseling and group 2 with group weekly intervention) non-obese cancer patients, but this decrease were not significant. The description of the patient’s diet in both groups, as regards total calories of macronutrient, the caloric intake from carbohydrate was the highest one. we found that the fiber content of the patient’s diet was lower in both groups.
In our work there was a non-significant decrease in serum albumin level in group 1 obese patients with daily counseling after 6months of therapy but there was a significant decrease in non-obese patients with daily counseling.
As regards group weekly counseling group (group 2) there were highly significant decrease in serum albumin in both obese and non-obese patients.
The prevalence of anemia in our study was (69%). There was a non-significant decrease in the mean hemoglobin level in group 1 obese cancer patients with daily nutritional counseling after 6 months of chemotherapy but there was a highly significant decrease in non-obese cancer patients.
As regards group 2 patients with weekly group nutritional counseling there were highly significant decrease in mean Hb level in both obese and non-obese cancer patients.
There were improvement of quality of life in both group 1 and 2 either obese or non-obese cancer patients but this improvement were not statistically significant. Also, there were correlation between quality of life and mini nutritional assessment (MNA), but this correlation was insignificant. It means that malnourished cancer patients either received direct daily intervention counseling or weekly group counseling were improved in their quality of life
