Abstract

Considerable theoretical and experimental studies were performed in
the past to evaluate the pile load capacity in sand. These studies can be
categorized into the three main sections as: estimating the pile base capacity, evaluating the pile shaft capacity and the effect of critical depth. Most design approaches idealize the pile-soil system to a certain extent. Therefore, the influence of numerous additional factors affecting the pile capacity in sand such as soil characteristics, pile
characteristics, methods of pile installation technique, and the nature of loading should be investigated (Kraft, 1991). In order to the predictions of the pile-soil interference behavior are more difficult and occasionally beyond the ability of conventional predictive approaches,
there is a need to more advanced approaches and techniques in relation
to the pile capacity in sand. Therefore, more investigations were performed to find pile-modification techniques, alternative construction techniques as well as studying the mechanism of
interactions between piles and sand. While, there is a lack of data concerning the influence of the pile base geometry on pile driving resistance and the mobilized pile base resistances.
