Abstract

Ankylosing spondylitis(AS) is a systemic disease with articular and extra articular manifestations .The latter may occur very early on in asymptomatic patients. .Our study aims at assessing pulmonary involvement, both quantitatively and qualitatively with HRCT, in order aid clinicians in their treatment plans and early diagnosis. AS affects all the components of the respiratory system, resulting in various radiological features ranging from apical scarring to basal parenchymal bands. The added musculoskeletal involvement of the thoracic cage, the spectrum of primary involvement varies greatly and so are its complications .The most important being apical fibrosis which is commonly falsely attributed to TB by many clinicians. The cross sectional study group was that of 30 AS patients (26 males and 4 females), age range 17 to 59 years. They were scanned using typical HRCT protocols in a 16 channel (Siemens Emotion) multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) scanner in our institution
