Abstract

Background: Bell{u2019}s palsy (BP) is the most common cause of lower motor facial palsy. In BP, spontaneous complete recovery was found in about 69% of patients. There for about 31% of BP patients who did not receive the appropriate treatment may suffer from incomplete recovery with residual facial muscle weakness with or without one or more of the commonly encountered complications e.g. synkinesis, hyperkinesis and /or contracture. Facial synkinesis and asymmetry are the most distressing consequences of facial paralysis. Purpose: To determine the effect of biofeedback electromyography training versus botulinum toxin A on synkinesis and facial asymmetry in Bell{u2019}s palsy.Methods: forty-five patients with moderate facial synkinesis were divided randomly into three groups equal in numbers. All participants were evaluated using sunnybrook facial grading system (FGS) andhouse brackmann scale.The first group were received selected home program of exercise for facial synkinesis only. Second group were received electromyography biofeedback training for facial muscles in addition to home exercise program. Third group were received a single dose of botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) injection for the management of synkinesis in addition to home exercise program
