Abstract

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide. Actually, it accounts for 34% of reported malignancies among Egyptian women with higher incidence among urban residents and those over 40 years.The aim of the current study was to explore in- depth the lived experiences of women with breast cancer.Two research questions were formulated, what are the lived experiences of women with breast cancer?. And how do women incorporate breast cancer diagnosis and management into their lives and their bodies? Qualitative research approach based on phenomenological perspective was utilized with maximum variation purposive sample consisting of 12 participants. Data collected through personal background information form, semi-structured, face to face, open ended guided interviews, using voice recorder. Eight themes were emerged from data analysis as follows: intentional disregarding, seeking help, relationships and support system, emotional response, unforeseen effects of chemotherapy, troubled femininity,disturbed role functions and faith in God. The current study concluded that diagnosis of breast cancer and the resulting treatment transformed the life of women’s completely; from primary care giver to care receiver, changed in body and future consideration, changed in work and social role as well as changed in personal relationship.The current study further highlighted that interventional programs should be implemented as a routine psychosocial support care and services to provide continuous, sensitive and individually tailored support for women to adjust well to the new and changed life sequel
