Abstract This study shows that critically ill children are at high risk of developing invasive fungal infection in a pediatric intensive care unit. Delaying the appropriate antifungal treatment of Invasive Candidiasis (IC) while awaiting blood culture results has been associated with increased hospital mortality. The Candida score is a useful tool to differentiate critically ill patients, who would benefit from early antifungal treatment (score >3), from those in whom invasive candidiasis is highly improbable (score {u2264}3). One of the developed biomarkers is (1,3)-Ý-D-Glucan (BG), which is a major cell wall component of almost all fungi except for Zygomycetes and Cryptococcus species. Various studies measured different sensitivity and specificity of (1,3)-Ý-D-Glucan (BG)substance |
