Abstract

Sodium alginate was modified using grafting technique and by chemical modification. Firstly, Acrylonitrile was grafted onto sodium alginate to obtain amphiphilic copolymer SA-g-PAN. The kinetic parameters of grafting process included monomer concentration, initiator concentration, reaction temperature and time were studied. The grafting parameters such as the percent graft yield (% G), percent graft efficiency (% GE) and percent homopolymer (% H) were calculated and determined the optimum conditions for grafting process. The copolymer was characterized using FTIR spectroscopy, XRD and thermogravimetric analysis. Nanoparticles based on prepared SA-g-PAN were formed through nanoprecipitation technique and characterized by Transmission electron microscope (TEM) and then hydrophobic model was encapsulated Secondly, modification of sodium alginate has been done through cations-exchange between sodium ions and p-phenylenediamine hydrochloride salt. The modified alginate (PPD-SA) was characterized using FTIR spectroscopy, XRD and thermogravimetric analysis. Nanoparticles based on the modified alginate was formed via nanoprecipitation technique and cytotoxicity was tested
