Abstract

Introduction: Oxytocin, was a known as a hormone and a neurotransmitter. It has been lately known to be involved in the drug addiction cycle especially during developing tolerance, in relation to craving and during withdrawal. In addition, many studies have discussed its effects on personality traits and how they both affect the addiction process. Objectives: The aim of the study was to assess the relation between serum oxytocin level, craving and personality traits among patients with active opiate dependency in comparison to abstinent patients and healthy controls. Methods: A consecutive sample of 30 opiate dependent patients who fully meet the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM IV-TR) criteria for opiate dependence, in addition to 30 patients fulfilling DSM-5 criteria of opiate dependence with at least 6 months were assessed regarding serum oxytocin levels, craving levels and personality traits using immunoassay kit, brief substance craving scale and personality inventory for DSM- Brief form respectively. They were compared to each other and to a sample of 30 healthy controls matching both groups Results:There was a statistically significant difference between the patient{u2019}s group and the control group in serum oxytocin levels (p<0.05)
