Abstract

Many years ago, the beneficial effects of using reinforcement to improve the property of soil have been demonstrated. Over the last three decades, the use of polymeric reinforcement such as geogrid has increased in geotechnical engineering. Among the possible applications, earth reinforcement techniques have become useful and economical techniques to solve many problems in geotechnical engineering practice, such as improving the bearing capacity and settlement characteristics of the footing. This research presents the effect of geogrid inclusion on the bearing capacity of two parallel strip footings located at the surface of the clay. This study aimes to study the behavior of two parallel strip footings over clay soil. The effect of using sand cushions with different thicknesses over clay soil has been completely understood. Also, the effect of using one geogrid layer inside every thickness of sand cushion has been completely understood. On another hand, this study makes a comparison of every case of two strip footings with one strip footing under the same soil conditions. In addition study the same parameters with varying the clay soil type between using very soft clay, soft clay, and medium-stiff clay. A broad series of finite element analyses were performed on two footings with varied widths of 1,2 and 3 m and with varying the clear spacing between two strip footings (s/b=0, 0.5, 1, 2, 3 ) using a two-dimensional plane strain model using the program Plaxis (ver. 8). A very soft clay, soft clay, and medium-stiff clay were used for the analysis, and the soil was represented by yielding criteria including the Mohr-Coulomb model, while reinforcement was represented by an elastic element, A wide range of boundary conditions, including unreinforced and reinforced cases, was analyzed by varying parameters such as clear space between two footings to the width of two footings, depth of sand cushion, the width of footing, reinforced sand cushion with one layer of geogrid are investigated.
