Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and potassium iodide (KI) on the micro-tensile and shear bond strength of Glass ionomer restoration to dentin of primary molars.
Methods: Sixty primary molars were collected and stored in saline. For the micro-tensile bond strength 20 teeth were sectioned into halves through the carious lesions and randomly allocated to intervention (n=20) and control groups (n=20). The intervention specimens were treated with 38% SDF followed by KI and the control specimens with deionized water. For the shear bond strength 40 teeth were divided into two groups, intervention group (n=20) was treated with 38% SDF followed by KI and the control group (n=20) with deionized water. The samples were stored in saline for 14 days in normal room temprature, and the dentin surfaces were restored with Fuji IX GP Extra. After 24 hours in saline, the specimens were prepared for micro-tensile and shear bond strength testing until failure. Mean bond strengths were compared using the paired t test and the failure mode was recorded.
Results: The mean micro-tensile strength for the intervention group was 3.29 MPa (1.15± SD) and 2.77 MPa (1.16± SD) for the control group (P>0.05). The mean shear bond strength for the intervention group was 3.84 MPa (0.99±SD) and for the control group was 4.08 MPa (1.40±SD) (P>0.05). Failure mode was the adhesive failure only in all groups.
Conclusions: 38% silver diamine fluoride and potassium iodide (Riva Star, SDI, Australia) pretreatment of primary dentin did not have an adverse effect on the micro-tensile nor the shear bond strength of glass ionomer restoration.
