Abstract Ear infection is a common problem for both children and adults. In certain cases this infection can lead to serious life-threatening complications. Acute suppurative otitis media (ASOM), chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM), and otitis externa (OE) are the three main types of ear infection. While most ear infections are caused by bacteria, otomycosis is a fungal infection. In the present study, ear swab specimens were obtained from 202 patients with ear infection admitted to the out-patient clinic of ENT (ear, nose, and throat) department of Tanta University Teaching hospitals, Faculty of medicine, Tanta University during the period between April 2014 and October 2014. Among the investigated cases 183 (90.6%) being bacterial and/ or fungal culture positive. The population study of the microbial positive cases showed an overall male to female ratio of 1:1.4. The peak age-specific prevalence occurred between 1-5 years in children and 26-35 years in adults. The unilateral disease pattern was seen in 94.5% of the cases. The clinical pattern revealed that CSOM type of infection was predominant where it represented 41%, ASOM represented 25.1% while OE represented 33.9% of ear infection cases. |
