Abstract Background: Epidemiological studies of multiple sclerosis (MS) are lacking in Egypt, the first documented registry of MS epidemiology in Egypt was documented and presented in an Egyptian study at 2010, followed by documented registry of clinical database of the Multiple Sclerosis Unit at Ain Shams University Hospitals, a major tertiary referral center for MS in Egypt. Aim of the study: This study aims to study clinical characteristics patients with Multiple sclerosis presenting to MS unit at Neuropsychiatry department Ain Shams university in last three years (2019 to 2021) Patients and methods: It is a Descriptive retrospective study based on medical records of MS patients. Data was entered retrospectively using clinical history and patient’s records from MS database at Multiple Sclerosis Unit at Ain Shams University Hospitals (total 500 patients). from 2019-2021 . patients clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) or multiple sclerosis and fulfill criteria of time related revised McDonald criteria. (Polman,C.H , et al.,2010) Results : Our study showed some demographic data of MS patients as Female: male ration 2.7:1 , The mean age at disease onset was between 27-29 , 5.4% with positive family history of MS , 11.6 % were current smokers , Consanguinity among MS patients was noticed in 12.6 % of total samples , Family history of other autoimmune diseases were found in 4.8% of total samples In our study, the most frequent presenting symptoms throughout the whole years (2019-2021) were motor symptoms 69.20 % of total samples, followed by sensory manifestations 58.00 % followed by cerebellar symptoms (45.80%), with least cerebral symptoms of 17.40 % RRMS was the most common MS presentation in our population (79.60%), followed by SPMS then CIS and PPMS which is similar to the most of Arab countries. Conclusion: The demographic data includes age at onset, gender, risk factors as smoking and family history is similar to most of Arab and western countries,. motor symptoms are the commonest throughout the years, our findings also high light the value of establishing registries in Egypt in order to be able to study, prospectively, the clinical course of the disease, the response to various DMD’s and the epidemiology of MS in Egypt. |
